I haven’t been up to a ton of writing, but I’ve not been inactive. Here’s what I’ve done in the past couple of months:
- SmartBlog on Leadership: Moving past performance appraisals: A conversation with Aubrey Daniels: This was a lot of fun. Aubrey is a wonderful, ornery, wise man who cuts through the theoretical noise of management with how people really want to be treated.
- Medium: How The Onion Has Changed Over 15 Years: Reviewing the Issues of Dec. 9, 1998, and Dec. 12, 2013:
This is one of my favorite pieces of writing, and I usually don’t think
I shine. This prompted an almost immediate email from The Onion’s
real-life marketing people to reassure me of their commitment to
quality. - SmartBlog on Leadership: Steve McKee’s “Power Branding” and why brands can’t forget about humans: I don’t have the smarmy view of not reviewing books I don’t like; I simply have little time or desire to review almost anyone’s books, and so if I do, I’d better think it has something to offer. Steve’s was one of those. I’m sure I’m not his target audience, but I thought non-marketing types like me could enjoy and learn from it.
- Medium: Stop using Martin Luther King Jr. as a prop for “business lessons”: A criticism of think pieces of the worst, most selfish kind.
- SmartBlog on Leadership: Comcast, TWC and restoring the value of customer service: A likely fruitless attempt to justify why cable companies should do better by their customers.
I also was very fortunate to be interviewed by Dan Rockwell of Leadership Freak for two recent posts:
